Why Christmas is 'longer' in the Philippines?
Dec 6th 2012, 06:17

Tonight, the GMA News TV public affairs show, “I-Juander” hosted by Susan Enriquez and Cesar Apolinario, “juanders” why Christmas is “longer” in the Philippines than everywhere else.

Most Filipinos look forward to the celebration of Christmas each year. In fact, while the rest of the world start celebrating the season in December, Filipinos begin decorating homes, shopping malls, offices, etc. with Christmas decors and lights as early as September, the first of the four “-ber” months of the year. The Yuletide season in the Philippines also extends up to January or until the so-called “Feast of the Three Kings/Wise Men” is over.

This practice by Filipinos has captured the attention of CNN and the Guinness Book of World Records, which branded the Philippines as having the longest celebration of Christmas. And not only that, apparently we are also no. 1 when it comes to Christmas spending, especially for decorations.

In the province of Rizal, a house is decorated each year with, literally, thousands of Christmas lights. And so the owner’s electric bill come Christmas time not only doubles but triples.

In Antipolo, a residence is now known as “Casa Santa” because it houses a collection of anything related to Santa Claus. The house’s total collection is now valued at more than P5 Million.

Meanwhile, when it comes to decorating Christmas trees, TV personality Tessa Prieto-Valdez won’t take the task lightly. In tonight’s episode of “I-Juander,” the celebrity will show her unique Christmas tree, which is filled with all types of decorations one can possibly think of.

Of course, Christmas doesn’t have to be ostentatious. Susan and Cesar will find alternative means of making the season lively and enjoyable even without spending too much.

Also, they will take viewers to shoppes and thrift stores where Christmas decors and gift items are sold at very affordable prizes.

Don’t miss tonight’s episode of “I-Juander,” airing at 8:00pm on GMA News TV Channel 11.
