Spotlight on Gee Canlas of 'The Amazing Race Philippines'
Jan 2nd 2013, 02:30

Get to know more about former “Music Uplate Live” host and “The Amazing Race Philippines” contestant Gee Canlas, dubbed as TV's fastest talker.

Gee Canlas

TV host Gee Canlas impressed audiences when she was introduced in the now-defunct ABS-CBN show Music Uplate Live, where he made a name for herself as Speedy Gee because of her ability to talk really fast.

She then was given a hosting assignment in Pilipinas Win Na Win, alongside Pokwang, and Kris Aquino. The show however was axed after only a few months.

Recently, however, Gee made a surprise, bold move when she figured as one of the finalists of TV5's The Amazing Race Philippines, where she is paired with her good friend Sheena Vera Cruz.

Her inclusion in the program also showed her transformation. Since she started her stint in the business, she lost considerable weight.

"Joining Amazing Race Philippines is an opportunity that presented itself, so I grabbed it. In fact, even before this local edition, I auditioned for the regional show," says Gee. "Pero ngayon, with a new partner Sheena who is a very good friend of mine, we were chosen to be part of the show, so thankful talaga kami."

Gee Canlas 2

In the reality show, Gee and Sheena were tagged as the "reunited friends" because Sheena lives in New York. Their team became the 4th top team.

The "reunited friends" positioning served the team well because their friendship became one of the strongest assets of their partnership.

"We know each other since we were in College. We both love to dance. She is a member of the Philippine All Stars. Kabisado naming ang isa't-isa," adds Gee. "Pero her being an Inglisera also became a problem for us."

Gee recalls that in one challenge, where they should have the same answer to a question, Sheena mistook the word "malas" to "malakas," which obviously made the two have different answers.

In retrospect, however, Gee feels that their sense of humor made their team last that long in the competition.

"Malaking bagay talaga yung marunong kaming pagtawanan yung mga pangyayari," admits Gee. "Pero, one thing I've really learned was that we were guided by two things as we joined the competition- FAITH and FATE."

Their journey on the show, according to Gee, is something she would cherish for the rest of her life.

Any regrets?

"Nothing really. It is just that after I saw the episode where we got eliminated, I felt na sayang, andun na e. That's the only painful part," says Gee. "But it is something that I will never forget."

Aside from her participation in the show, Gee has been reaping commendations for her portrayal in the independent film Melodrama Negra. Which won Audience Choice award.

"I welcome every opportunity that comes my way – hosting, acting, dancing," enthuses Gee, who is now part of MediaNation, management of Marvin Agustin, Aiza Seguerra, David Pomeranz, among others.

Sean Penn Plays a Mob Boss in 'Gangster Squad'
Jan 2nd 2013, 03:21

Public enemy number one, Mickey Cohen, is brought to life on the big screen by two-time Oscar-winner Sean Penn in Warner Bros.’ epic, action-thriller, "Gangster Squad."

Sean Penn

"I thought it would be a fun old-school gangster picture with a cast I have great admiration for," Penn says on what drew him to the film. "And upon meeting director Ruben Fleischer, I was sold."

Set in Los Angeles, 1949, "Gangster Squad" revolves around ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen who runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians he has under his thumb. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart.

Mickey Cohen may be an underworld figure, but his very public image and commanding presence make him a man not to be crossed…in business or pleasure. He goes beyond merciless; any breach is a betrayal for which one pays the ultimate price. But he also has the undeniable charisma that comes with great power.

According to producer Dan Lin, "Cohen, in real life, was over the top. He was a gangster, but a Hollywood gangster. He was funny, he loved talking to reporters and, in public, he really wanted to entertain people, as if he were one of the movie stars he was always trying to woo. Of course, in private, he was doing dark, evil things."

Fleischer cites, "When I imagined bringing the movie to the screen, the one character that everything seemed to hinge on was Cohen, the villain, this larger-than-life personality. I immediately thought of Sean Penn, so having him in the role was huge. Mickey is such a dynamic, memorable, menacing character and Sean has the gravitas, the intensity and the humor to pull it off."

Though only remotely familiar with the real man, Penn says that for his interpretation of the character, "I tried to ignore the literal. The real Mickey Cohen so resembled Al Capone, who I thought De Niro had done so indelibly in 'The Untouchables,' that I felt, for a wide audience who largely would not have been aware of Mickey Cohen, mimicking Cohen in looks or behavior would have been unnecessarily burdened with baggage. I thought it was interesting to approach it and let it grow from just a few pieces of Cohen's background. He was a prize fighter, but the style of fighting was more primitive than today, and Cohen was more primitive in many ways."

"Sean really brought to life this guy who, in reality and in our somewhat fictionalized account of him, has a huge ego and is very colorful," producer Kevin McCormick relates. "Cohen had his own publicists, spreads in Life Magazine, owned his own haberdashery and never wore the same suit twice, and had a collection of beautiful, statuesque ladies on his arm all the time. Sean's interpretation of the man is fascinating. In the heyday of gangster movies, those guys were always such seductive characters, and I think Sean has that same ability to mesmerize us."

"There's something very appealing about the way Sean plays Mickey Cohen," co-star Josh Brolin echoes. "Watching him during a scene, I couldn't help but like him, even though my character despises him and everything he stands for. Sean really brought out the charm in him, even when he was doing something deadly."

Opening across the Philippines on Jan. 30, 2013, "Gangster Squad" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Suraj Sharma of "Life of Pi" is Nominated as Best Young Actor in 18th Critics "Choice Movie Awards"

From Oscar winning filmmaker Ang Lee comes "Life of Pi," a breathtakingly beautiful story of a boy named Pi played by newcomer Suraj Sharma who is lost at sea with a Bengal tiger, following the loss of his family in a shipwreck .

Suraj Sharma who hails from India never expected a "Life of Pi" when he accompanied his brother to the movie's casting call.  Born and raised in Delhi, India and raised by mathematician parents, it seemed that from more than 3,000 hopefuls who auditioned for the role, Suraj was destined to play the role of Pi, a mathematical constant transcendental number.

He has recently been nominated in the upcoming Critics' Choice Movie Awards for Best Young Actor for his role in "Life of Pi" along with other actors/actresses such as Elle Fanning ("Ginger & Rosa") and Logan Lerman ("Perks of Being a Wallflower").

The story revolves around Pi, a delightfully enthusiastic teenager who lives with his zoo-keeping family in Pondicherry, India. Inquisitive and intelligent, he explores different cultures and spiritual traditions. Pi has open-minded parents who allow him to become a free thinker, finding his own path. Due to a worsening economic climate, Pi's parents decide to emigrate to start a new life in Canada. But the ship sinks.

Eventually only Pi and the tiger are left alive on the lifeboat and the unlikely pair embarks on an Odyssey that is fraught with danger.  On the precarious lifeboat he shares with the tiger, Pi finds inner strength and becomes aware that some kind of higher power is in charge of his destiny.

The heightened emotional connections presented in the movie required exceptional performances from its cast, none more so than the neophyte thespian who would take on the titular hero.

"We searched for a young man who had the innocence to capture our attention, the depth of character to break our hearts, and the physicality needed to embody Pi on his journey," says director Ang Lee. "During his audition, Suraj filled the room with emotion, much of which he conveyed simply through his eyes. His natural ability to believe and stay in the world of the story is a rare treasure.

"Suraj's investment in the story made us really believe that whatever challenges we faced, the film was really going to happen," adds the director.  "When we saw Suraj, we saw the movie.  Mr. Lee marvels at Suraj's innocence and efforts, noting, "We are all experienced and perhaps a little jaded.  Suraj reminded us why we want to make movies.  Every day was a miracle."

For Suraj Sharma, the experience of landing the starring role was surreal. "It was all so new for me," says Suraj. "I had never been out of India. I didn't know how to act or swim. I learned how to swim and now it's my favorite thing to do.  Shooting the film in Taiwan and meeting people from all over the world in the crew was fantastic. You get an idea of how diverse the world is. I was really inspired by everything I saw and everyone I got to know.  I wanted to give it everything I had."

Sharma also went through rigorous workouts to increase his stamina, which gave him an inner discipline and strength that enabled him to empathize with the character. "What defines Pi is his never-ending will to survive, he has a belief in the world and I think that's what sets him apart from everyone else. He survives by instinct. But he also possessed a strong sprit from the beginning, right from being a child. But Pi kept that innocence inside him and with innocence comes belief."

"Life of Pi" opens January 9 in 3D and 2D theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox thru Warner Bros.

0 Showbiznest: “Parental Guidance” Showing in PH Theaters on January 16

"Parental Guidance" Showing in PH Theaters on January 16

"Parental Guidance combines comedy and pathos in the best way," affirms Billy Crystal, who portrays Artie Decker.  "It's what life is about.  This film has something for everyone."

"The film was my idea," says Crystal. "I have three grandchildren of my own and another one on the way in March. The two older girls stayed with us for six days while my daughter had her first vacation away.  After the sixth day I rested and then walked into the office and said,  'okay, here's an idea for a movie. It is a horror story!'"

In the story, Billy Crystal's Artie and Bette Midler's Diane are "the other grandparents" to their three grandchildren – meaning their son-in-law's parents have a much stronger connection with the kids, which Diane envies and has long sought to correct.  But Artie and Diane's infrequent visits to their daughter Alice's (Marisa Tomei) home have relegated them to second-tier status – along with a few photos of the couple hidden on Alice's mantelpiece.

"It's not that Artie and Diane don't love Alice – who is their only child – and her three kids; they just don't understand them," explains Midler.  Diane has renewed hope when Alice reluctantly invites her and Artie to babysit the couple's grandkids while Alice and husband Phil (Tom Everett Scott) enjoy some time away from home.  For Alice, her invitation is an act of, well, desperation – her in-laws are unavailable so she must turn to Artie and Diane for help. (Alice's misgiving even lead to her breaking out in a rash.) But Diane sees it as a golden opportunity: "Grandparenting is a second chance" to be a part of their lives of their grandchildren and Alice – she tells Artie, who is much less enthused about hanging out with the kids he barely knows.

Artie's mixed feelings about this "second chance" are partly due to his recent professional setbacks.   A minor league baseball announcer for over 30 years, Artie has just been fired, losing his dream to work in the major leagues.  Still reeling from that disappointment, the last thing he wants is to look after his grandchildren.  But Artie will ultimately discover that there's more to life than announcing ball games.  "He's been fired from a job he loves, but then finds himself kind of falling in love with his grandkids," says Crystal.

Before getting to that point, Artie undergoes a series of granddad vs. daughter/grandkids comedic misadventures, misunderstandings and mistakes, not to mention daughter Alice's lack of faith in his ability to stick to her myriad rules and regulations.  Says Marisa Tomei:  "Artie and Diane are like a 'club of two' and haven't cultivated relationships with their grandchildren.  They had a great time living their own lives, but forgot to get to know the kids."

"Parental Guidance" opens January 16 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
